McKinstry Expands Mission Critical Reach

Design-build data center development in Austin, TX with self-performed mechanical, plumbing and fire protection.

In an increasingly digital and AI-driven world, data centers stand as the backbone of modern technology infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity and uninterrupted service. Constructing and maintaining these facilities require specialized expertise to achieve 99.999% uptime while maintaining efficiency and cost-effectiveness. McKinstry has collaborated with partners across the country to meet these complexities, including our latest project work in Texas.

McKinstry partnered with a data center client in the Austin, TX area, providing design-build consulting and construction services for two new data centers. The first of the two data centers was completed in May 2024, spanning 217,000 sq. ft. and boasting a capacity of over 30 megawatts.

Emphasizing our client’s commitment to sustainability, the data centers are designed with high-density cooling and cost-effective power solutions andsupport their goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2029. Both immediate and long-term environmental impacts of design choices were considered, integrating energy-efficient technologies and sustainable practices. This holistic approach not only reduces their carbon footprint but also sets a new standard for environmentally responsible data centers.

“Data centers have historically been heavy users of energy and water, but these designs and construction are changing that narrative,” said McKinstry Vice President for Mechanical New Construction Thomas Tellefson. “As the need for more data centers accelerates, it’s imperative that we reach new levels of efficiency and sustainability in both design and operations. McKinstry is fortunate to partner with data center leaders pushing what’s possible in data center design, manufacturing and efficient operations to balance growing computing demand with energy and water conservation. We are building new models for the future of data infrastructure and a better built environment.”

McKinstry provides nationwide, full-service support for data centers, drawing on 50 years of experience in design, cost reduction and risk management. Handling all aspects of development, from design to maintenance, we’re committed to eliminating waste from process, resources, equipment and schedule to give clients the most cost-effective project to build and operate without comprising uptime.

The new Austin center serves as an example of the future of data centers, boldly redefining what innovation means in the industry. By pushing the boundaries of technology and environmental responsibility, it’s paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable digital future.
