Learn More About Vick’s Experience
I began my career in the performance contracting controls industry in 2005 and started working at McKinstry as an independent consultant in 2010. That’s when I was first introduced to McKinstry’s PeopleFirst culture and variety of offerings. After several years in consulting, I followed the acquisition of our Critical Environment Facility Management business by BGIS and eventually became their Director of Business and Solution Development focused on sales and client expansion.
I joined McKinstry full-time in 2020 as part of our National Technical Services team as a senior account executive focused on the Critical Environments and Facility Management providers. I can honestly say, it’s the best career move I’ve made, glad to be back and look forward to many more years with everyone.
I love that what I do now doesn’t feel transactional. Coming from controls and performance contracting, this is different. My current work focuses on amalgamating solutions across our lines of business and cross-pollinating with regional and national contacts to come up with a solution set for our clients. It’s crucial to cultivate strong relationships in this position and really build solid partnerships with our clients. How do we get them from where they are now to where they want to be?
I hope to inspire a culture of innovation that extends beyond the confines of what we do as business unit. Innovation, to me, means more than just creating novel technologies; it involves a mindset that encourages creative thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration and a willingness to challenge the status quo. By fostering an environment that values curiosity and embraces unconventional ideas, we can catalyze groundbreaking solutions that address complex global challenges.
Spending time with family is important to me. In winter, we’re on the slopes as much as we can, and during the summer, we spend as much time as we can at the lake. My family loves to travel, and it’s great to take them along on work trips when possible. We’re taking our first family trip to Europe in the spring, and our goal is to help the kids experiences different cultures and approaches to life because they’re so used to how we do things in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s the same guiding principles as I teach my kids: Treat others the way you want to be treated. Have empathy and be considerate with how you interact with others. Take ownership and responsibility for your actions and personal development. You are where you are because of the actions you’ve taken. The past is the past. You can use it to grow but keep moving forward.
One of the philosophies I’ve started putting onto the kids is “are you better than you were yesterday?” It doesn’t have to be a gigantic change. It can just be, “hey, today I made the bed in the morning instead of when I came home from school.” It’s the iterative process of continuously improving ourselves and becoming better people.
I’m one of two Canadians on our entire team. I’m nomadic in nature; I’ve moved 13 times and have lived in four different countries.
