Paving the Way to a Zero-Carbon Future in Salt Lake City School District

McKinstry partners with the district to create a sustainable future for students, staff and parents.

McKinstry celebrates Salt Lake City School District’s momentous first step toward its goal of reaching clean, renewable electricity by 2030 and overall carbon neutrality by 2040. The approach, adopting a zero-carbon focus as a component of an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC), provides a cost-neutral solution for the school district to achieve optimal learning environments for their students and plan for resilient and sustainable operations.

Salt Lake City School District Superintendent Timothy Gadson shared a message of commitment and urgency, “The plan will require continued board leadership and bold action across the district, as the costs of inaction are too high.” The district’s urgency is shared by McKinstry in our Action for Impact efforts.

We are honored to partner with the district on Phase 1 of their Zero-Carbon ESPC project to transform learning spaces into more healthy, productive environments for students and staff. These initial accomplishments will mark a significant leap forward for the district in meeting its 2040 goal. It will yield a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by implementing LED lighting and powerED across the entire district, electrifying two elementary schools and installing more than 1 MW of solar power at six schools.
