Celebrating McKinstry's Building Good Efforts of 2022!

Every season is a time of giving at McKinstry. Building Good in our community is and will always be our priority.

In 2022, McKinstry team members across the nation amazed us with their commitment to service. Volunteering more than 2,427 hours across 79 projects, we rolled up our sleeves to help over 50 organizations. From construction to accounting, 62 McKinstry departments invested their time back into our communities, ensuring we continue to focus our effort on helping them thrive.

We recognize that our community engagement is fueled equally by our Charitable Foundation. In 2022, McKinstry provided $1.5 million in charitable giving to 237 nonprofits in over 28 states. Whether it be hands-on work or a donation, McKinstry is helping to drive the advancement of our communities.

Hear from McKinstry employees about their experience with Building Good

Why did you become involved with Building Good?

“Acts of service and giving back to the community are values that my family has always prioritized, and I was excited to learn that McKinstry has built these values into the company culture. Seeing how our Building Good events positively impact our community is such a valuable experience, both in terms of helping my community and for building camaraderie with my coworkers!” – Ainsley Cawthon, Marketing Specialist (Phoenix)

“Being new to McKinstry and new to Utah, Building Good was a great way to experience McKinstry’s people-first culture, as well as get exposure to the unique needs and struggles of my new local community and environment.” – Jason Grooms, Building Energy Engineer (Salt Lake City)

“I became involved because I thought this was a great opportunity to get out in the community and contribute my time to help others” – Lakisha Gorham, Strategic Account Manager, Technical Services (Tampa)

What does Building Good mean to you?

“To me, Building Good represents an ongoing and genuine commitment from McKinstry to live out our values, especially “Make a Positive Difference.” – Ainsley Cawthon, Marketing Specialist (Phoenix)

“We are very fortunate to be afforded the opportunity to give back, contribute, and restore our community in ways that are meaningful to us. In addition to being a fulfilling and valuable experience in and of itself, it is a great opportunity to bond and strengthen the team outside of a work setting.” – Jason Grooms, Building Energy Engineer (Salt Lake City)

“To me, Building Good means the opportunity for each of us at McKinstry to put our commitment to communities into action, and uphold our core value of making a positive difference” – Ashley Ruiz, Director of Corporate Social Impact (Seattle)

What kinds of organizations have you gotten involved with through Building Good?

“I’ve had the pleasure of being involved with many organizations through Building Good across the country over the past decade. Some of my favorites have included our STEM mentorship program in Denver, The Children’s Book Bank in Portland, and Food Lifeline in Seattle.” – Ashley Ruiz, Director of Corporate Social Impact (Seattle)

“This year in the Salt Lake City office, we were involved with Sageland Collaborative, restoring riparian habitats, and the Downtown Women’s Resource Center, preparing and serving meals to women suffering from homelessness. ” – Jason Grooms, Building Energy Engineer (Salt Lake City)

“Through Building Good, I have worked with the Treehouse organization, small community food banks, Food Lifeline and many more!” – Lakisha Gorham, Strategic Account Manager, Technical Services (Tampa)

What Building Good experiences have stood out to you?

“A Building Good experience that really stood out to me was an event at Food Lifeline that I organized for families, not just the team. We had a big turnout of families, and the kids were really excited to make an impact in their communities.” – Lakisha Gorham, Strategic Account Manager, Technical Services (Tampa)

“In the STEM mentorship program in Denver, one year we worked with the students to build a high-performance greenhouse by renovating an existing dilapidated one that was on the roof of their school. The students spent all year auditing the greenhouse, identifying opportunities for improvement and then constructing it. Seeing the big reveal was amazing – but it was more amazing to see how proud the students were of what they had accomplished.” – Ashley Ruiz, Director of Corporate Social Impact (Seattle)

“I always enjoy volunteering at Harvest Compassion Center, which provides clothing, food, and other necessities to underserved communities in Phoenix. There, we get the opportunity to directly interact with those in need and fully understand the positive impact of our volunteering work.” – Ainsley Cawthon, Marketing Specialist (Phoenix)

How do you feel that Building Good benefits McKinstry?

“The Building Good events are a great way for me to get out of my routine and put our values in action. I always come back from these events feeling more energized, motived, and productive!” – Ainsley Cawthon, Marketing Specialist (Phoenix)

“It is a true “practice what you preach” initiative. Every day, our work is benefiting the environment, social equity and building a stronger foundation for the future on large scales, but sometimes it is good to come down from the 1,000ft view to spend time interacting with those in need, experiencing the issues in our backyards, and seeing the change a small group people can make. This adds valuable perspective and drive for our important work here at McKinstry.” – Jason Grooms, Building Energy Engineer (Salt Lake City)

“Building Good enhances culture and brings our people together. It showcases how we can be a purposeful company- one who does good work for our clients, but also does good for our communities.” – Ashley Ruiz, Director of Corporate Social Impact (Seattle)
