Facility Upgrades to Save Kilgore College Nearly $1 Million In Annual Energy Expenses While Improving Campus Environment

Kilgore College announces multi-million-dollar contract with McKinstry to upgrade
all campus buildings for energy efficiency

KILGORE, Texas (Oct. 22, 2018)Kilgore College and McKinstry are partnering to improve all facilities at both the college’s Kilgore and Longview campuses through comprehensive energy retrofits that will enhance classroom learning and on-campus living environments.

The Kilgore College facility upgrades will improve the student experience while saving the school nearly $1 million in annual energy, facility maintenance and operational costs. For the project, Kilgore College took out a one-percent-interest loan with the Texas State Energy Conservation Office (SECO) and will use the guaranteed savings realized through project upgrades to fulfill the college’s debt obligation.

Facility upgrades will include the replacement of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Outdated lighting, water systems, bathroom fixtures and building management systems will also be replaced in all Kilgore and Longview campus buildings, including the Canterbury Engineering and Sciences Building, the Devall Student Center and the East Texas Oil Museum. In addition, all dorms will receive much-needed upgrades, enhancing the on-campus living experience and outdoor lighting upgrades will improve visibility and safety on campus.

“The beneficial impact this project will have on the Kilgore College campus is tremendous,” said Ryan Sheard, McKinstry South Region lead for higher education and the Kilgore College project lead. “During our initial planning process, we worked hard to address as many critical facility needs as possible, and both the McKinstry and Kilgore College teams were pleased by the vast energy and operational savings opportunities we uncovered that will allow for such an impact.”

Construction is expected to begin in October 2018 and last until early 2020. Students and faculty will experience minimal disruption during the renovation process with much of the work taking place after-hours.
