McKinstry Partners With Washington State University To Support PNW Crop Production and Research

The WSU ARS Plant Biosciences Research Building is a cutting-edge laboratory and office facility located at Washington State University’s (WSU) Pullman campus. Designed in collaboration with the US Army Corps of Engineers, WSU, and the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the state-of-the-art building will serve as a hub for groundbreaking research and innovation. The facility is specifically tailored to accommodate scientists from both ARS and WSU, fostering a collaborative environment for research aimed at advancing agricultural productivity, sustainability, and crop and soil health.

Future research will support crop production in the Northwest, including wheat, pulse (pea and lentil) and potato — crops vital to the region’s agricultural economy. Research will aim to develop innovative solutions for improving crop yields and promoting sustainable farming practices. The facility will also house the USDA ARS Western Regional Plant Introduction Station, a gene bank for essential plant species, aiding breeders and geneticists in creating resilient crops. The facility will play a crucial role in ensuring the long-term viability and success of Northwest agriculture.

Furthermore, the building’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its research goals. It incorporates LEED Silver certified design elements, energy-efficient systems, and sustainable building materials. With 31% reduced energy usage compared to ASHRAE 90.1 – 2013, the new building reflects ARS’ and WSU’s dedication to reducing its ecological footprint. This holistic approach not only benefits the environment but also sets a standard for future research facilities.

Construction on the expansive 100,230 sq. ft. facility began in June 2024 and is slated for completion by January 2026. Once operational, the WSU ARS Plant Biosciences Research Building will serve as more than just a center for scientific exploration — it will be a pivotal asset benefiting farmers across the region and beyond. By fostering innovation and offering new insights and techniques, the facility aims to enhance agricultural practices critical to growers and businesses.

McKinstry’s expertise in sustainable building solutions has supported integration of energy-efficient technologies and environmentally friendly practices into the facility’s design and construction. Together with partners such as PAE Engineers and Hansel Phelps, stakeholders are committed to delivering a cutting-edge facility that not only meets the operational needs of the agricultural research community but also pushes the boundaries of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
